What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

One of the most common ailments in the United States affecting more than 30 million people yearly are sinus problems. Every year, many people dread different seasons because of the looming threat of the sinus infection. In many cases, people have become accustomed to taking their morning dose of Zyrtec and Flonase to get through the day because nothing else seems to work. Fortunately, for patients who haven’t found solace in any medication, there is still hope.

Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure used to help blocked sinuses. A small, flexible balloon catheter is used to open up blocked sinus passageways to facilitate drainage of the mucus that builds up in patients suffering from chronic sinusitis symptoms. The catheter is easily inserted into the inflamed sinus, inflated to expand the sinus opening, saline is sprayed to flush out the pus and mucus from the sinus and the system is removed, leaving the sinuses open and clean.

While this seems like a very serious procedure, Dr. James Azzi, a board-certified otolaryngologist/ENT, performs this surgery without general anesthesia in the comfort of his office so a surgery center is not required. Balloon sinuplasty is a less invasive alternative to traditional surgeries and is not only safe, but extremely effective. It is an option that patients find has little recovery time with minimal discomfort.
